Global forest fires are becoming an increasingly urgent issue, causing serious impacts on ecosystems and climate change. The causes vary, ranging from natural factors to human activities. Understanding the root causes and quality of environmental impacts is critical in addressing this problem. Natural factors that cause forest fires include lightning and extreme weather conditions, such as prolonged drought. However, it is estimated that around 80% of fires are caused by human activities. Land clearing for agriculture, deforestation and uncontrolled forest fires are significant contributions. For example, in Indonesia, the use of fire to clear agricultural land causes widespread forest fires every year. The impacts of forest fires are very broad and complex. At the ecosystem level, fires result in loss of biodiversity. Many species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss. In addition, fires disrupt the life cycle of plants, causing the loss of food sources for many animals. Directly, forest fires also release carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This process contributes to global warming and climate change. According to research, one hectare of burned forest can release up to 7 tons of CO2, worsening the global climate crisis situation. The socio-economic impact is also no less significant. Fires can destroy agricultural land, impact food production, and increase food prices on the market. Especially in developing countries, this can lead to hunger and increased poverty. Human health is another detrimental aspect. Smoke from forest fires can cause respiratory problems and lung disease, as well as worsen public health conditions, especially in areas around the fire. Given their inherently destructive nature, forest fires destroy the quality of life for many individuals. Forest fire mitigation efforts require international cooperation. Sustainable land management, monitoring using advanced technology such as satellites, and implementing strict policies against illegal burning activities are important steps. Public education and awareness regarding the importance of protecting forests is also crucial in preventing fires. A synergistic strategy is needed between the government, non-government organizations and local communities to support forest fires. Strengthening regulations, training in environmentally friendly farming techniques, and incentives for sustainable practices could be long-term solutions. Overall, global forest fires are a serious problem that requires a holistic approach.
